Game Reports
1sts vs Cowichan Velox 39 - Cowichan 17
- by John Lyall
The Velox Valhallian Premier Team started their season with a convincing 39-17 win over the Piggies from Cowichan. The new format this season means every game is of importance, so a good win was a great start for the season.
Velox started the game at a point-a-minute pace, with Lunkhead scoring the first try of the season. In doing so, Lori Murray won herself $625 in successfully bidding on the big man the previous Thursday night. Congrats, Lori.
The opening twenty minutes provided some truly exciting rugby, forwards and backs running over and around the Piggie players. Velox debutantes Lawson, Stanley, the returning Lunk, Kiwi trio Murray, Dougie and Ray all shone. Returning players from last year clearly demonstrated they are ready for the challenges ahead. Of note was the tight work shown by Jai and Junior in the engine room.
Cowichan responded with some inspired play in the first half, but it was clearly our day. Coach Stanley made great use of the bench, with 22 players seeing the field in total, including an entire front show replacement.
Lunk was a deserved Man of the Match, continually terrorizing the opposition in set piece and open field running.
We prepare now for a much sterner test next weekend against the Bays at home (2:45). We look forward to a big crowd to support us in this big game against the Huddy Huddy's.

2nds vs Cowichan Velox 5 - Cowichan 35
The B's didn't fare so well in their season opener. They struggled in the first 40 minutes with penalties and defensive assignments, leading to a 25-0 deficit at half time. The second half was a different game however, with the squad playing up to some of their potential.
Man of the match honors went to captain Jake Nessman (#8), who scored Velox's only try.
Bob McNeilly suffered a neck injury during the final minutes of the game, and was taken away by ambulance. We've heard back from Bob, and while he is OK and due to recover fully, he did fracture a disc in his neck. He's obviously done with rugby for a while, and the whole club would like to wish him a speedy recovery.
Women vs SFU II Velox 24 - SFU 20
This Sunday game was an exciting one, with a close score through out. The woman of the match was Brittany: she stopped an opposition break away by holding up the try in-goal, after sprinting half the length of the field. Not bad for a prop!
Coming Up
The men have a double header this weekend against James Bay, but not, unfortunately, in the same place. The 2nds play first, with a 12:30 kickoff at McDonald Park. The 1sts then play James Bay at Velox, with a 2:45 kickoff.
The women play on Sunday on the mainland, against Douglas College.
Hawaiians Are Back!
I have more Hawaiian shirts just in, with a different design. They are again $45, and I'll have them on display this Thursday evening. I'll also have a variety of other Velox gear like toques, ball caps, bucket hats, beer cozies, and Velox Old Boy t-shirts.
