Velox 6    Pacific Pride 11

- Written by John Phillips

Winter arrived early at Velox Park for Veloxs game against the Pacific Pride, with the weather providing generous amount of wind and rain, just enough to turn what spectators hoped would be fast flowing game into a good old fashion mud fest.

Under atrocious conditions both teams had trouble controlling the ball at the breakdown, the resulting turnovers prevent the teams from completing more than four set of play and any continuity before turning over the ball. In the conditions the game turned into an old fashion slogging attack game with hard modern defence, the single try of the game being scored by the Prides No14 Simon Dunne. Dunnes try was scored out wide in the 27th minute, Veloxs defence being stretched after having to absorb repeated attacks on their line, their efforts not being helped by being on the back end of a large penalty count.

At half time the score was 8- 3 to the Pride, Velox s point coming from a penalty courtesy of the boot of Konrad Nikkel. Once again the Velox forwards dominated their opponents in the scrum, on several occasions driving their opposition backwards off the ball, unfortunately Velox were unable to capitalize on their breaks, the Prides cover defence squashing their attacks, the slippery ball doing the rest.

At the end it was the difference of the one try between the teams in a game that could have gone either way.

Best Players for Velox was Flanker No.6 Ray Young whos work rate in and around the scrum was outstanding. For the Pride it was No3 Prop Mike Georgas.

For Velox: Konrad Nikkel   2 Penalties

For Pacific Pride:  try to Simon Dunn, Rob Turk, Charles Baumberg 1 Penalty each

Coming Up

There is plenty of rugby for the coming weekend.

On Saturday, we host UVic for a double header. At 1pm, the B's play the Norsemen, and at 2:45 the A's take on the Vikes. The first game of the day though will be the women against Trinity Western, at 11:30am.

That evening, we will be having a theme den party: Nerds and Schoolgirls. Starts at 9pm.

Parking Lot

Any one that has been at Velox on a busy day knows that the parking lot can get a little congested. Experienced Velox members know that if you park in the back corner on a game day, you are going to have trouble getting out! For visitors though, it can be shocking to find that your car is penned in by someone parked in the middle of the lane.

In an effort to bring some order to the chaos, the executive has instituted the following policy. If you park anywhere except in a lined stall, you must have your name displayed on a piece of paper on your dashboard. If cars need to be moved, it will then be an easy matter to find the drivers.

Paper and pens will be left at the bar to help out with this. Be warned though: if you don't have your name visible and your car needs to be moved, it will be towed!
