Game Report
B's vs Port Alberni
- written by Meic the Welshman
The mighty beavers on a road trip again - this time some 7/8 rookies (guys fleeing the arctic conditions of Ontario and the prairies) took the bus up to Port Alberni. Port said they had a few 16 year olds playing - they already had beards and a pot bellies and will fit right in.
Momentum as usual was always with the Port forwards - they completely showed their true style with continuous rolling mauls and hard drives from the scrums and line outs - thus resulting in a push over try from 15 yards out.
Velox forwards never gave up with Nicko and Peter like 2 jack Russell Terriers, they were everywhere. Good quick ball from young Scottie to Todd, Dale and Welshman feeding 18 (Shaun) to put new boy Andrew on the wing in the corner. Try converted by an almighty drop goal from 18 from the touch line.
Another new boy on the other wing is Billy Whizz - Stu - some excellent sniping from Todd, feeding Dale who galloped on with one of his where is he going? runs feeding his ever present partner Welshman who then broke one tackle to feed Billy who sprinted 30 yards to score.
Forwards were starting to tire for Port and Velox young guns were slowly beginning to pick up momentum, as they started to run freely with Nicko leading the charge followed by Ginger, Peter, Davetheprop, Camo, and even Petunia.
Good work once again from Scottie (9) in passing quick ball to the backs with Todd marshaling them well. Great gap finding by the Welshman finding his partner Duck all day long ended back with the Welshman all alone to kick the ball 10 yards from the Port line. Contested line out by Ginger and Peter burrowed over for a typical back row try pick and fall.
The boiler room worked excessively to get the backs ball which eventually paid off with Stu being sent to go solo and sprint in 40-50 yards to score a great try in the corner.
Changes were made in the 2nd half - Couch guy coming on the flank, Brandon to hooker for the 1st time since high school i think, Boner to lock, Casey, Dan and Crank in the backs. Yes all our points scored in the 1st half - so a 2nd half of incredible defence from all 15 on the field only saw a penalty try by a 40 yard kick and chase by Port where Billy Whizz (accidentally) took out his opposite number over the line, try under the sticks and a yellow card for Billy. Final Score 22-13.
Man of the Match went to Billy Whizz for his brace of tries. Moments of the game Shaun's huge effort attempts for the conversions.
Coming Up
This weekend is the official start of the second half for all teams.
The A's and B's host Oak Bay at 1pm and 2:30pm on Saturday, in the start of the province wide Premier and first division leagues. There will be another auction for the Premier players this Thursday, to raise some money for the team. Bid on which player you think will score the first try, win some money, and support the club!
The women play Sunday, travelling to UBC.
The newly resurrected 3rd division men's squad also plays Sunday, at home against Nanaimo. I don't have an official kick off time, but I'm assuming it's 1pm. To sign up for the squad, talk to Ashley (cooksnbooks@shaw.ca) or Darryl (akipops@yahoo.com).
Velox Party
Don't forget that the club is hosting a huge dance this Saturday night after the games: the Six Months Until Summer Party, with a Luau theme. $7 cover, live band (Western Funk Rodeo). Players need to remember that they are responsible for selling their tickets.
Warm Up Jackets
Players getting a warm up jacket from Winston need to bring their $25 on Thursday.
Super Bowl
The club will be open for a Super Bowl party next weekend, February 6th. Naturally there will be a chili contest. The Velox Old Boys also have a game against the Ebb Tide before the Super Bowl, so it should be a full house.
